Nothing beats learning about fractions with concrete objects. Fraction bars or unifix cubes are both great choices. But what about objects found in everyday life? Things like pizza or apple slices? What about orange slices? I'm going to demonstrate how to teach fractions with tomatoes. I bought 3 extra firm tomatoes from the grocery store, a good slicing knife, and a cutting board. My purpose was to discuss how the tomatoes changed each time I cut them. I wanted to help my students recognize vocabulary, add fractions together, and realize that fractional parts are simply parts of a whole.
So, first show your students two tomatoes and cut only one of the tomatoes into four equal wedges. Show each part to your students, then place them together to form a whole tomato once again, so that your students know that the tomato itself has not changed. Remove one wedge out of the tomato and remove it from sight. Motion towards the remaining tomato and wedges and ask your students:
- How many tomatoes did I start with? (2)
- How many tomatoes are now represented? (1-3/4)
- What part of the tomato did I subtract? (1/4)
Now, cut both tomatoes into quarters and remove from sight all pieces but 5 of them. You should have 5 parts that are 1/4 of a whole. Ask: How many tomatoes are represented here? (1-1/4 tomatoes) Then, take two of the quarter sections and cut them both into halves. Ask your students:
- What did I just do? (I changed the 1/4 sections into 1/8 sections, doubling the quantity of slices in the 1/4 section.)
- How many tomatoes are now represented here? (The answer should still be 1-1/4; the amount of tomato represented has not changed, even though the fractional parts represented are different.)
- Ask the students to show that both scenarios yield the same amount of tomatoes on a piece of paper, using math operations and/or pictures. (optional)
Now, show the above two pictures to your students. Ask them to discuss in groups the difference between the two pictures and explain to the class the difference/similarities between the two photos. (They both show 1-1/4 tomatoes, but use different fractional parts). Ask your students to show their work using two number sentences.
